Evidence of copper is there so it was more than likely removed chemically.

These weren't around when I was a kid, but if they were, I'd have had a go at stripping them myself.

Because there is still a considerable amount of detail,
I am considering that it could be a fake, and not acid etched.

Only my theory, I may very well be wrong.

It is worth doing an experiment and photographing the result, on this Forum to confirm, either way.

It's reverse plated. It's easily done by reversing the anode and cathode, and the process can be done with a battery. It's a standard lab experiment.

I feel it was plated over the copper plating. On the bust at 5:30 you can see the copper plating. Also the wrinkles of the copper plating is present. If it were non plated, it would not be shiny and the planchet would be smooth.
