I wanted to try to get a feel for how different guides price different coins to see kind of a broader picture. So I picked a couple coins in different price ranges and I'm intrested in seeing how wide a range we get. also include whether your guide is high low or fair for these particular coins.

If you could enter what guide your using and the price it gives for the following coins it would be much appreciated.

1909 VDB 1 cent F-12
1865 3 cent piece EF-40
1877-CC Seated Liberty dime VF-30
1890-CC Morgan dollar AU-50

Im using the monthly magazine coin values and I get
$17
$45
$40
$275

Thanks For the help This should be an interesting experiment.

I'm game. From Coin Prices but a few months back although I doubt much has changed.

1919VDB F12 $12.75
1865 3 Cent Nickel XF40 $37.50
1875CC Seated Liberty dime VF30. Coin Prices has only VF20 and XF40 listed. There are two types though Mintmark in Wreath and mintmark under wreath.
Respectively in the two grades the first type goes at $35.00 and $47.50.
Second type at $45 and $75.
1890CC Morgan AU50 $245 or $700 with tail bar.

I wonder what the PCGS online guide has to say?

I'll start off with 2009 RedBook values.

1909 VDB 1 cent F-12
$14
1865 3 cent piece EF-40
$35
1877-CC Seated Liberty dime VF-30
No VF-30 in RedBook for this, but VF 20 is $38 and EF 40 is $65
1890-CC Morgan dollar AU-50
$225

Seems RedBook is underpriced or your mag. is overpriced...

Coin dealers use many guides for retail.

What they REALLY use though is CDN. Coin Dealer Newsletter or commonly referred to as Greysheet.

Greysheet lists "dealer to dealer" prices. Anyone can subscribe to it actually.

Word of warning though as I've seen it too many times. If you walk into a shop or a show, not knowing the dealer, and start spouting off about prices in Greysheet you'll make few friends.

Getting better prices on both ends requires a lot of study, getting to know your dealer(s) and deeper pockets never hurts.

So if your paying like 5% over Greysheet your probably getting a good deal and not angering the dealer too much?

Could someone post the Red Book and Greysheet prices for:
1851 3-cent silver in F-12
1865 3-cent in F-12
1840 Large Cent in F-12

I'm going coin shopping tommorrow
And apparently my magazine isn't as reliable as I had hoped

Coinrus,

You're getting the picture but I gotta ask you this.

How well do you know your dealer and how busy is his shop? It can mean a lot. Unfortunate but true.

Numismedia.com's price guide lists them as:

1909 VDB 1 cent F-12 $8.34
1865 3 cent piece EF-40 $41
1877-CC Seated Liberty dime VF-30 $29
1890-CC Morgan dollar AU-50 $198

On the dime I took an average of their VF20 and XF40 prices.

Numismatic News is a weekly coin magazine published by Krause Publications. The first issue of every month includes the Coin Market supplemental. Annual subscription is about $35.

Most dealers use the Coin Dealer's Newsletter(aka CDN or Greysheet), it lists bid and ask prices but IMO some values are on the low side. They have tiered subscriptions based on how many different pricings and supplementals you want.

Coinrus the other thing you need to consider is that right now you are asking for different prices from different guides and your dealer may do the same. I know that mine goes by the Coin Values magazine and if I base my prices by that when I go in then I have a better understanding of his prices. You may want to get to know your dealer and ask them what they are using to price their coins. This way you may be able to get an advantage down the road as well by knowing how they shop and price will help you in knowing where and what to buy.
