An interesting piece, this was dug up around 30 years ago in the garden of a Victorian house in England. I don't have dimensions currently as making enquiries for someone else, but should be able to get weight / diameter soon. Thanks! www.kingstoncoincompany.co.uk

If genuine, look up what you can find about Hunan "Silver Cake" Taels. I don't mean the kind you bake, it's a term used for cast silver coins. It will make it easier for readers to read the inscriptions if the top photo was not upside down. I took the liberty of correcting that. Your bottom image is "Shen-ping Pure Pattern, One Tael". And since there are many of these, very accurate weight and diameter measures are needed to get you to a catalog reference number. A first series of these were made in the style of 2 rows of 3 characters. Yours resembles the second style similar to Kann 952 having 3 vertical rows of 2 characters. Translations among the coins are "Made in the official mint at Hu-Nan" and "Hunan Fo-nan Official Mint".

Albert - Thank you so much for your detailed information, that is most interesting.
I will get hold of the detailed weight and diameter etc, and put them on here as soon as possible.

wish I had a bite of that cake, couldn't resist.
Did they find it via metal detecting?

I can add more after we have an accurate weight, thickness and diameter measures. These came in perhaps 4 different styles around 1906 and sort of went away around 1915. Made with irregular rounded edges and pretty thick depending on the value. They have an outer circle, a pearled ring and another circle. Some had 49 pearls or 50. Maybe the OP can give us an accurate count because that also points to different catalog reference numbers.

Let me just say that I have no knowledge about this type of coin. I did make a search, though and found one that has the same text on it. The one that I found was sold by Heritage. It has a different count of pearls. The overall look is very different as well. The text is much finer. The pearls are much smaller. That is not to say that the OP coin is not genuine, but the mere fact that it was found 30 years ago does NOT prove that it is not a counterfeit. Here is a link to the coin sold by Heritage: https://www.numisbids.com/n.php?p=l...55&lot=29027

They certainly can look different as my catalog shows over 40 including smaller and larger pearls. Many or most all have a common reverse with differing styles of the characters. The obverses are not all common.
