We recently inherited my wife's grandfathers coin collection, and I've discovered a set that Appears to be fairly rare. It's a 1971 empire of Iran 9 coin set with 4 gold and 5 silver coins. The case is in rough shape and some of the coins appear to have some tone that's has developed in time. With the condition of the case and coins do they still have collectible value, or would they simply be worth the gold and silver value? I can't find much information about the set other then a few auctions where it has sold.

Definitely has collectible value. Melt is around $2,200 or so, but as a collectible it's worth more like $3,500. Very cool inheritance :)

A rare and desirable early modern proof set.
Silver not beautifully toned but nevertheless normal as goes with this type of case.

I visited Tehran way back in 1970.
It was a very beautiful city at the time. A very positive, bright, go-ahead sort of city.

@mrcsx, first welcome to CCF. Second, while I can't add any information regarding the value, I would caution you to not touch or even breathe on these coins as this could detract from the value. Also, absolutely do not clean them.

Very nice collectible proof set.
Not the typical "hey I inherited some coins" post!

Probably better to stop further toning with these coins by putting each in some sort of individual air tight holder.
Make sure that the original box and certificate are retained. That would be essential.
