I've been wanting a nice sestertius for a long time, but my budget wouldn't stretch to the prices they go for at auction, nor the fixed prices on places like VCoins.

This coin came up on ebay with all the things I was looking for - a 'tiber patina' (more likely, the coin has just been in a coin cabinet for a long time), a highly artistic reverse and a good strike. I put in the largest bid my budget could reasonably stretch to and I ended up winning, which just goes to show you that real bargains can be had on ebay.

The type itself is IVVENTAS (Juventas, Youth), a rare reverse issued for Aurelius when he was a Caesar, with Juventas standing left, with a trophy of arms over a round shield in the right field. What I find very interesting is that this example has very good artistic qualities (in my opinion), while all the examples I could find online were substantially less well laid out and executed. I couldn't find a single example like this one (best I could find can be seen on the PAS site, found in Kent in 2007: https://finds.org.uk/images/arichar...1%20copy.jpg), but Aurelius, once he had grown up and become Emperor himself, issued a very similar type for Commodus as Caesar.

Really nice remaining details on this one @ben, especially the folds of Juventus' cloak. Just asking--not sure--is there a little bronze disease lurking at the bottom of any of the pits?

Great find, and great story.

Indeed, one can find good deals on ebay. I've begun poking around there again, and added 5 recently to my 16th/17th c. Poland collection that were good value for money (even if not bargains, no auction fees on the buyer side, modest shipping charges, etc)

Ben, very nice pick up. I don't know if it's true or not, but I find that this bust type, even on a denarius, go for bigger bucks.
