I found a quarter with what I guess is machine damage. I look at a lot of vids on coin striking and read threads in here about it. They say you can spot MD by the thinning of the devices like I observed on my last coin question. I noticed the coin in question has a lot of Die Deterioration. The doubling effect does not seem like MD because it does not look like the devices have been thinned. The D is the most notable. Also, can someone explain or point me in the correct direction to explain how, if everything is struck at the same moment, a group of devices (GODTRU) can be effected and and others right next to them are not. Looking for knowledge. Thanks for any input.

Yes that shelf-like doubling looks like MD to me. Also, look like you have two different quarters here--you were comparing them, right? Overall pics would be nice so that we can see the year. Thx!

But mostly contact marks that damaged the devices. On the States quarter on that side, the doubled earlobes are the key on these.

@Spence, correct. They are both 2000 Mass. One was decent and the other MD. I was a little mad that I did not have an example to help support my question about doubling on some devices but not others. Well, as it just so happens, I ran into a coin showing exactly what I am talking about. This coin, a 2000 Maryland, shows the example I am referring to. This is the way I think MD should happen...with all devices in a group showing the doubling. Not just a subset.

@coop How can some devices in a group incur damage and not the others that are right next door? At six per second I am sure some freaky things are going on in the metal.

Depends on what it them. Smaller items can affect just some areas, larger events can alter more in a certain area. It just depends on what caused the damage. Even vending machine damage coins. They hit at a different angle than a head on collision with an edge from a larger coin.
