I have this 1924 Canadian nickel. It's got some black/green splotches on it. Any suggestions on a safe method to remove it?

I am not an expert but I'd approach it by first giving it an overnight soak in acetone and see if that helps.

Make sure you use pure acetone not the nail polishing stuff.

I did give him a quick acetone dip, I'll give him an overnight bath and see how he feels.

I've got a quart of acetone I purchased at a hardware store. It doesn't have a list of ingredients, I'm assuming it's 100% acetone.

If the label says "pure." then its the right stuff. Walmart sells a 2.00 bottle of pure acetone in the health and beauty dept. as nail polish remover.

And if you read the container of any acetone you buy, you will find there is a bitterant added (10 parts per million). Its still safe for coins (dipped hundreds+ by now with it). Follow the link.

That damage is irreversible. It may get lighter with acetone but it's already pitted. Nickel isn't supposed to rust like that so something went wrong. May have been a bad batch of nickel, or a really strong chemical. Looks to happen in any year of the Geo.V nickels. I've had a 1925 and 35 with the same type of ugliness .
