what do you think of this coin. The detail is high, I think.

Something about the obverse turns me off. Don't know if it's environmental damage or just crusty looking.

If the obverse was as nice as the reverse it would be a a killer coin.

Might need a professional opinion on whether conservation might help it. If it were mine I'd leave it alone.

I agree with Westernsky that the obverse fields are grainy. Its hard to appreciate any luster. The reverse however, beautiful.
Rest in Peace

Dar gonnit you guys would have to put a damper on this coin . At first look at obverse I said wow real nice circulation cameo . Then I flipped it over and saw a beautiful uncirculated Half . Now you guys have brought up about crud on the obverse right side which I failed to see in the first place . So now calling it AU-58 might be necessary . Professional conservation might be in order .

AU-58, possible ED on obverse, but a fantastic reverse!

Only the tiniest amount of wear on the high points of the design, both sides.
I have seen better toning, but that does not affect the grade, only eye appeal.

A very desirable coin, nevertheless.

Au58.

Eye appeal is part of a grade

Definitely. No curb appeal, no 65 grade 99% of the time, surfaces aside.

Personal opinion - looking at the coloring of both sides, I'm guessing the obverse fields have been lightly cleaned in an effort to erase some of this crud and maintain a symmetrical look. Note the perfect dark circle around star 2 - not a natural look.

Au53. Has sharply struck obverse with au58 sharpness but is hurt by lack of luster
