Provide pictures and tell us whatever it is you need! Do you think your coin is special or just general information on that type of coin?

A quarter is short of "Quarter Dollar coin", it is worth 25% of a dollar. Geroge Washington is on the obverse and eagle in on the reverse. It is a very common coin to find. Silver quarters were made up to 1964. In 1965, they were then clad, which is copper and nickel. 1970 is clad. Make sure to find out whether your coin was made in Philadelphia or Denver.
1970 has a mintage of 136,420,000 1970 D has a mintage of 471,341,328
So the Philadelphia one is rarer, although they are very common. I probably have one in my other pants.
They are worth face value, but if they are graded by PCGS or NGC and get a really good grade, they may be worth a few dollars, but this probably isn't the case with your coin, as coins that high grade usually have special treatment, a wasn't circulated, unlike (I assume) yours. Your coin is probably free to spend, no need to hold on unless you think there is something special about yours that the one in my other pants doesn't have.

Ok I understand that I need to get it graded. But. On the reverse and under my scope I can see the faint numbers 1949.

Pretty hard to understand what you mean without pictures. I wouldn't send it for grading/authentication until you have an opinion that it might be worth it. Many cases of letter or numbers on coins happened after minting and the coin would just be worth the 25 cents and not worth the grading fees.

And in a great many cases "faint" numbers or letters seen are just cases of paradelia.

Quote: Ok I understand that I need to get it graded. But. On the reverse and under my scope I can see the faint numbers 1949. First, the marketers for grading companies love to hear people say a coin "needs" to be graded...it takes money from your pocket and gives it to them. Despite marketing hype, grading is ALWAYS optional. Having said that, if you have a better coin and want maximum profits, then a slabbed coin will bring in max. profits. The marketers have done their jobs well. Just don't make the mistake of wasting your money to have it graded without first getting an educated opinion about what you have. Post some pics and the people here will not only save you time, but probably save you from wasting money as well. Without use of a Delorean, the 1949 you see could not have been put onto a 1970 quarter at the mint. There were no 1970 quarters at the mint in 1949 - hence the 1949 dies could not have been used on the 1970 quarter. All 1949 dies would have been long gone (used up and defaced by the mint) in 1949, so none would have been available in 1970 at the mint for use to date your quarter. You are most likely left with the following answers: 1. Added numbers by someone after the mint - hence PMD. 2. Pareidolia As has been said - pictures will greatly help.

We know a 1941 Canadian quarter was, as was a 1900 quarter. We know a 1964 quarter was there in 1972. None of them were errors though, they fabrications by employees.
