Anyone want to take a shot at this one. I was wondering if it's worth getting graded in your opinions.

I would probably just buy one that is already graded, it looks to be around AU, based on pictures. Maybe if it was part of a bulk discount grade, but otherwise cost of stand alone grading not worth it.

I agree with all of the points that have been made.

If it is not owned by the OP already, just buy it if you want to, and put it in a 2x2.

If you buy it or similar, buy it as an ungraded coin, a seller will want more for it, if it has been graded.
Remember: 'buy the coin, not the holder'.

Actually it is mine, that's why I was asking about the grading. I suppose it's because of the way it looks to me and was thinking it would be nicer in a hard holder. Thanks for the opinions.

I figured AU for sure, not expecting much more though but AU55-58 would be nice..haha There's something about this type of tone as well as the Lustrous Brown graded purplish/blue/brown tone that I really love to see.

If you want the slab look, pickup a pack of holders, quadrum makes some that are same size as NFC, but use an inert black foam. I have some, but they don't look as good on tones coins, too dark in my opinion, especially on small coins. There might be other styles that have a lighter finish, different holder, but same size

That's a nice looking Fish Scale! As a raw coin, I would see it as AU-55 or AU-58, without any real difference in price. It's a nice example, and definitely would sell quickly as a solid album coin. I don't think you would see a significant gain in value by having it third-party graded. The only circulated King V Fish Scales I would expect to see graded are (obviously) the 1921 in any grade and maybe the 1915 in AU.

There can be a downside risk with some TPG services, because of toning. PCGS, in particular will sometimes bump a coin +.5 or +1 or knock it as much as -2 points because of toning.

Really nice coin. Thanks for sharing it with us!

fortcollins - My pleasure sharing it with you guys, nice to find people who join you in your enjoyment. For the grade-bumping, yeah, that worries me a little but because it's so small, I'm thinking the holder would actually distract from it's stand-alone beauty. I don't usually collect the tiny things but from what I heard, they are some of the hardest to find in high grade because they were so often handled back then. There may have even been some that went down on the S.S. Titanic that we'll never get back...lol

Value of the coin does not justify the cost of slabbing, despite the fact that it is a really nice coin.
Hard encapsulation OK, but may be hard to find a capsule small enough.

In situations like this,
for extra protection,
I cut two 1.5x1.5 inch squares of stiff clear acetate sheet plastic recovered from a food package container. I staple the coin between the clear acetate sheets, then enclose inside a normal 2x2.
You get the convenience of still including the coin in it's proper place in your collection, as well as providing a much better level of protection.

You can still provide a full description of the coin on the 2x2: date acquired, amount paid, etc.
Can't add your own descriptions on capsules or slabs.

My avatar coin is protected and described in this way.
