Hello today I went to cash my check at the bank and as always I asked if they had any dollar coins or half dollars because I collect them. I was handed this 2007 James Madison and it appears to me that it has an error. I'm fairly new to collecting but I think it's etheir improperly annealed or missing clad layers on both sides.it weighs 7.95. Would appreciate any opinions and input. Thank you for all your help and I apologize if my pictures aren't the beat
Sacagawea and Presidential dollars are not clad like dimes, quarters and halves, they are a manganese allow with a yellowish almost gold color. This one looks normal to me.
I'll have to try and post some different pictures so you can see the colors better. And the weight is off at least a little. If I'm right they are supposed to weigh 8.1. This weighs 7.95. It's like grayish brown in color.. I'm waiting for my phone to charge enough to take pictures so bear with me. Thank you for your responses
Normal weight is 8.1 grams tolerance is +/- .3 grams so 7.8 to 8.4 grams is normal range. If it was missing a clad layer, and assuming the clad layer is roughly the same percentage of weight on the dollar as it is in the other clad coins, I would expect the weight of a dollar with one missing layer to be 6.67 grams. Two missing layers would be 5.24 grams.
