Hi guys!

I found these two Jefferson nickels in circulation and they jumped out at me for being in great shape, for their age. They look even better in person than in the photos.
My question for you all is... are these proofs or regular issues, and how would I best tell, for reference in the future? Thanks for any help!

Those are both regular business strikes.

Ok thanks for your input! In person they exhibit a bit more luster than what is showing in the photo. Is there something that would make you certain it is business rather than proof?

Keepers for sure. In change you say? Not for long. Looks as though someone raided a collection because they were hard up for cash. Standard issues, "business strikes" as they're called. Perhaps from a mint set.

Welcome!

@happycoinage,

Is that 1960 jefferson messed up like that in person. To be more specific, if you flip it how you would normally flip a coin, is the back rotated around like in the pics?

Not sure why it has not yet been answered, but a proof is obvious from having mirror surfaces, not just very shiny, and a very crisp strike.

Yes they are both very nice business strikes . No sharp squared off rims , not mirror -like in appearance and not FS . Save them if you want but not worth more than 25¢ each .

Thanks for the reply's everyone! I do have other proofs so I know what typical proofs look like. These are circulated coins so they would be considered impaired proofs if they are. When I showed them to some dealers at a show they thought they were circulated proofs. But everyone on here thinks they are business strike. I wish there was a more definitive way to know! The lustre is not translating to these photos. They may just be business strikes indeed though.

Oh and @GrapeCollects that was just the way I took the photo, it is not actual off kilter in real life when I flip the coin over.
