Hello, I have 2 1947 Nickels and I believe one is possibly a Henning Nickel. Here is why, the one I believe is a Henning, the Nickel to the Right, if you look at the top dome of the Monticello notice how the metal flowed and didnt come out quite right, almost or does? have flow lines. Also the way the lettering appears. And Jeffersons image doesn't appear to be right per se either. As for the weight, the one to the left weighs 4.84g and the right weighs 4.9g. Is this weight difference accounted for by normal wear over the years or is this a normal weight variance for these older Jefferson nickels? I know some of the counterfeit nickels were heavier, am I correct? But not all of them? Please give me your opinion to what I have here, if anything besides a normal 1947 Jefferson nickel. I believe you have normal nickels. The Henning nickels were heavy up to 5.6 gms. The 1947 version weighed 5.3 grams.

I'm only questioning 1 nickel. What if and I say this because it's so well worn and as is weighs 4.9 it was 5.2, 5.3 grams before it was cirulated.? Is the pattern of wear consistent with that much weight loss?

I agree that they are notmal and not the Henning Nickels.

All Henning nickels were struck by the same reverse dies, there is a hole in the bottom leg of the R in PLURIBUS that is distinctive and found on all dates of Henning counterfeits.

That not true. Note the examples above. They are different. On reverse had the distorted 'R' one didn't. I've always wanted a set of images from each year, but these two are the sets of images I have so far.

I also agree with coop seanqueue, Henning nickels have several reverse dies.. I myself am a collector and have 7 1944 Henning half of witch have the looped R and the others don't. 1944 is the easiest year to tell a Henning due to the large mint mark P above Monticello dome or lack there of.. I also have a 1939 Henning with a late die crack that matches the reverse of one of my 1944's

@ Nickelcollectr85 , I have 2 1944 Hennings without the looped R in ave. circulated condition . I always wanted to know their value . With you owning so many ,maybe you know prices ?  |

I'd saying going price as of now seems to be $60-$100 depending on condition and die markers. I've been trying to acquire all the known Henning nickel for awhile. Years are 39,44,46,47, and 53. I have both the 39's and 44's with the looped R and without the looped R... also have a 47 without the Looped R

The 1982 book "THE COUNTERFEIT 1944 Jefferson nickel" written by DWIGHT H. STUCKEY details the events that resulted in the arrest of Mr. Henning. I actually have 2 copies of this book that are signed by the author in mint condition I bought them from an old coin collector that had book and magazines stashed away. They are great references toward the Henning story

 This is the book that JC Stevens is referring to .. it's a wonderful read if any one ever gets a chance.. extremely hard to come by.. |

Agree there are at least two reverse dies, and that the "common" 1944 is typically available for under $100.
