I found this very nice 1875 Indian cent on ebay. My question is. In your opinion, what would be the max price that you would pay. I have consulted with my RedBook and I would appreciate your opinions. Thanks. cabomhn

What grade is it? Do you have a picture?

GSC usually has some nice raw coins offered on ebay but I have never bought anything from them to be able to tell you how well their pictures are a representation of the actual coin, I have watched quite a few of their coins but they always seem to go higher than I want to pay

I don't know how much this coin should go for; you will have to decide how to balance its positive and negative attributes. On the plus side, it has a really strong strike with excellent sharp detail. Even proof IHCs don't always have such a sharp strike. The color looks pretty good, possibly qualifying as "red" (RD) in terms of a mint-state grade. The rims appear to be defect-free. On the downside, there seems to be some shallow pitting in front of Liberty's portrait, some light scratches near OF, and a significant dent on Liberty's neck. Her cheek also has a few small marks. The field pits might be planchet defects that would not affect the grade, but the scratches, marks, and neck dent should hold the market grade down to the low MS level at best. The PCGS price guide shows a $450 price tag for this coin in MS-63RD and $215 in MS-60RD. Those prices are generally high retail for PCGS-slabbed coins. PCGS is very fussy about IHCs and might not slab this coin if they question the originality of the color or decide the pitting, scratches, and/or neck dent add up to "damage". This seller has a good return policy, so you are protected if you decide to go for it. The current bid is $9.95. That's a definite bargain!

If I do win the coin, do you think that it would be worth trying to submit to a grading company or just put it right into my dansco album. I have to say that the eye appeal to me is really sharp. Thanks for everyone's opinions.

If you win the coin......post up pics once you have it "in hand" and then get opinions on whether or not to "send it off" for grading and slabbing.....

I started a thread last week asking others' opinions on GSC -- they do a big volume on high end raw coins. My limited experience with them was that their grading was fairly accurate and I had no problems with them. Having said that, their photos tend to be glossy and Jaobler points to some potential problems that I agree with. I don't think you will have a problem if you need to return, and if you only want for your Dansco, then it's worth a shot.

Do not expect the coin to look like the pictures from this seller. In the past I've found a couple of coins they were offering in the Heritage auction archives, and if it were not for the same certification numbers you would never believe them to be the same coins.

I would not bid on this coin if I were you. It is already too high.

Huh How do you figure that the price is too high, it is minimally an AU coin It goes for $125 in AU and over $200 in MS grades, yet the current price as I type this is $51...

The prices you are quoting are for problem free, pcgs slabbed coins. This coin is neither.

Nope, no PCGS prices- I am using Numismedia values for raw coins. My point is that $50 is a F12 value and this coin is obviously much nicer than that. The only issue I see is a dent/struck through on the neck and I see it as a struck through since the beads are not disturbed with the other marks being more of the contact/bag mark variety. I would certainly not pay MS money for it but for someone to say that it is not even worth F12 money is beyond me

Biokemist6, from Jaoblers post (which I agree with).....The PCGS price guide shows a $450 price tag for this coin in MS-63RD and $215 in MS-60RD. Sooooo, $215 is for high retail in pcgs ms60RD. Knowing the seller of this coin, I doubt very much that it will look anywhere near as nice as the pictures, and the coin is not RD. What is the coin worth? That depends both on what the coin actually looks like, and what the individual will accept into his collection. $51 is probably too cheap, but with the coin in hand that might not be so. JMHO.

For a coin that is over 100 years old, not to bad. If I was interested I would go for about $100 to $200 at best. But then beauty is in the eye of the beholder you know. I would never buy anything without seeing it in person. I am a flea market, coin show, coin store person. Without seeing that coin in person, I'd pass

There stuff always goes for crazy amounts of money, so expect to pay a lot. I can't comment on their other items, but I do know when they have listed Shield nickels in the past they were always problem coins with enhanced photos (at least that's what they looked like to me).
