Good evening,
I came across this dime in a box of coins I purchased at an estate sale last weekend. Not sure what the conditions were when the dime was minted but I am sure that some of you out there will know how this happened.

This is a 1980-P Roosevelt dime on a very thin planchet, I have included the differences below. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, if you know what happened, do you think the dime is worth getting graded and slabbed? Thanks.

Normal Dime / Error Dime
Weight 2.27g / Weight 0.70g
Width 17.91mm / Width 16.80mm
Thickness 1.35mm / Thickness .60mm
Reeds all around / Reeds around part of edge

Dipped in acid apparently. Not an error. It's Post Strike Damage ( PSD).

Hi,
Thanks, but if it were dipped in acid how would the acid erode the inside of the dime and leave some of the detail on the obverse and reverse of the coin. I am not saying you are wrong, just trying to figure it out.

Thanks again

Different types of acid affect the metals differently.

The metal is reduced on your coin, just like an acid dipped example.

Hi,
OK, that makes more sense now. Oh well, I will keep looking for that rare coin, someday I will find it. Have a good night and I hope everybody has a great week.
