Here is my latest acquisition which has edge damage or a small clip.

I can't tell but I'd like to properly identify this on the holder.
I'm about 50-50 on this one.

I show six images I used my microscope camera and here's the So-called Dollar in question.

Thank you error people!

This will get little exposure for opinions & answers since there is not a section for errors on medals.

Does not matter if it is a coin or a medal, they are minted the same way. Not sure if it is a clip or not.

Bump

I'm no expert TNG, but I don't see how such a small clip could leave such a large void.

Thanks for looking Tunnioc. I can tell you gave it thought. I could see somebody grinding it down for a bezel but they wouldn't do it at that position? If it were just a tiny clip and the metal flowed out enough to meet the collar and to fill in the edge ut not up enough to make a rim? I don't know.
It is a pretty hefty and thick medal. I am leaning just a tad more toward some sort of damage.

I just don't know, it has me stumped and if it is damaged, I would like to note that in my file and holder. It will be around longer than I 'll be.

The damage looks old, as if it happened close to the striking date. I see an awful lot of damaged and worn medals from handling and being passed down through families. The wear/damage is always in one area/spot (the damage is not symmetrical - uniform on both sides). This medal looks like it was squeezed in a vice at the edge/rim after striking.

pilegicvs Thank you very much!
The only problem with the area(s) in question is that the rest of this medal does not have any significant wear and the gilt layer, which is part of the mfg process, is present on the rim in those lower spots.
What makes me want to agree with you is the raised area on the edge, but that should be much more evident and larger considering the amount of possible rim damage if it were actually "squeezed" in a vice or hand tool.

The flow on the rim is mostly an even gradual slope with no signs of a tool or vice bite.
I am not convinced that the gilt bronze blank used wasn't just a tad pinched or nipped when it was punched out of the sheet and before it was struck.

Again though, thank you guys for your comments and thoughts.

This looks like an authentic rim clip to me. I have been collecting clipped coins for almost 20 years. It is an interesting error, but it probably lessens the value of the medal rather than giving it an added value.

I'm with Scissel , looks like a clip to me.
As to the value I think your caught between two
world's . As a medal again agree with Scissel but then error
collectors might want something like this .
Either way a nice piece

Those last two opinions I think are right on, including that it does not add value perhaps.
I don't think it takes away any value though with a rim clip, if so, it takes away considerably less value than a damaged or tooled situation would.
It is a tough medal to acquire and for the price I paid, I am certainly safe no matter what.
If I get another nod or two on it being a "rim clip", that is what will go on the holder.

Thank you very much to all for your time and thoughts, those who say damaged and those who say error are equally appreciated.

I went and looked at a lot of small rim clip errors and this seems to be in line with the legitimate ones out there.
So I went ahead and labeled it as such.
