ADDED NOTE: After posting this I see that this is a 1947-S, which has no DDO listed for it on VV. How did I get a perfect match for the 1947-P? Is someone wrong here? Has to be.

Just checked 1947-S WDDO-001 but doubling does not match (that is a tripled die), markers do not match and mint mark is in the wrong place.

Original post starts here:

In a wild departure from my usual posts, here is a 1947 nickel I just found. I recently ended up with an enormous number of Jefferson nickels, and have been trying to find a nickel person to pawn them off on.

In the meantime, although I know nothing about the things I looked up the dates for the Henning nickels and figured I'd see if I could find one by looking for that hole in the R of PLURIBUS. Along the way I have a glance around some of the coins to see if anything stands out. 1947 P is one of the years I've been looking at for a Henning.

Well, this sure didn't stand out and is quite subtle, but I picked up the DDO on GOD and after a bit of research figured out it is DDO-001 (die marker is above the E in WE). I have also seen a couple of RPMs but tried to look them up and completely failed so tossed them back in the bag.

End result is that I won't be switching from Lincolns to Jeffersons any time soon, but I have one nice DDO for my efforts.

It matches DDO-001 on VV. Although, he listed it as a Philly one by mistake obviously. I would probably contact him about the mistake to correct it.

Continuing to research this, which I should have done before posting in the first place, but...

Brian lists a WDMO-001 as a distorted hub doubling occurring on P, D, S which matches perfectly. So I am thinking that this is, in fact a DMO, and, that DDO-001 is just an example of that and not a true doubled die. That actually totally makes sense as there are a number of such things on VV like the 1968-S coins.

So for now I think I will downgrade mine from DDO status to DMO status as I feel pretty sure that's what is going on here.

Oh..OK..not a DDO, but a DMO.....I guess by most people standards here I'm a newbee (hoarded my change [minus quarters{laundry money}]for 30+ years). Only got into the hobby a few years ago, (thanks to this site). But what the heck is a DMO?...Thanks and I think it's a nice condition coin..

Think of it like the master die doubling on 1972 Lincoln cents. The dies that make coins are created from a master die. If there is some doubling on the master die that will show up on a lot of coins as every die it made will have that doubling. Thus the doubling can show up on millions of coins across who knows how many individual dies and even across mint marks, and thus not terribly rare or important. So here the DMO is a distorted master die obverse which created dies for all three mints and can be found on P, D and S coins.

What are you seeing a doubled on this one? The 'T' looks like that on all of them:
