Poll Question
What does everything think about private mints "enhancing" coins especially the silver eagle.
Which one is your favorite?
Personally I like the gold enhancement, but not the coloring.

I voted BAD but really don't care. I have a hologram ASE somewhere in the house. It was a gift. It is interesting to look at but I'm sure it's not worth the price paid. I don't consider it a coin though since it was never intended to circulate.

I have a colorized shark coin from Australia that's cool, but I generally like my coins to be as struck. Something is lost when the minted surface is covered.

I have a dolphin coin from that same Australian series but the coins are designed to have the overlay. I shouldn't say it is mine though- I bought it for my wife since she likes dolphins. I think it is actually nicely done but otherwise I am not really a big fan of "enhancement". I would not consider this to be an altered coin since the RAM intended the coin to look this way as part of their Ocean Series. This is dramatically different from the silly plated State Quarters and hologram Eagles- those just look cheesy and are usually done as cheaply as possible.

I am not a fan of enhanced coins either, except those beautiful colored State Quarters! Sorry just kidding! In general I view enhancements as like the ones listed as untasteful, simple ploys to sell an otherwise plain coin. However, if you or anyone else likes them I beleive that is all that matters!

Im opposed to the term enhanced ! like some how they are worth more of more attractive with the manipulated devices . when in reality they are and never will be anything but altered damaged coins .
as a collector I spend a great deal of time looking for coins which have not been cleaned, altered ,or otherwise tampered with .
in other words completely original even if that (original)includes honest wear from circulation .

I voted "Any enhancement is bad." I am with Kurt, I prefer my coins to be struck! Biokemist is spot on. I find it acceptable when it is part of the original design, like the Australian Dollar shown. With the third-party jobs, it is not so much that the colourization or plating itself is bad, it is that the coin was "altered" post manufacture. But as long as people like them, they will continue to make them.

I voted bad also, I admit to owning a few but for the event or curiosity not the value. At this years Peddler Fair there was a gentleman doing quite the business with his jewelry booth, all enameled, all colorized, and all coins. Morgan dollars to Sacageweas, even sets of cloisonne liberty head dimes as earrings, all said to be original coinage, prior to them being "processed". Now wouldn't this be the perfect venue for forgeries? Why ruin an actual coin when a fake would suffice with the same result? Oh well just my opinion, but it was sad to see them all sitting there, in their suits of baked enamel, with no way to return to their former state.

Now, how did I drop the "as" when I typed that? I knew I should have "quoted" you and thrown in the .

All the better...one can always use some humor, especially on a "serious" coin forum.

I agree....on both the good belly laugh and a nice, non-enhanced, well-struck coin!

I actually voted for colorizing some coins. I think most people here are being a little to one sided when it comes to coins. As collectors, naturally we all want the best from the Mint and not touched, colorized, plated, etc. But there are many, many people out there that are not collectors and a normal, everyday plain old Silver coin is just a coin to them. If colorized or plated those types of people will and do buy them. Maybe, eventually those people will also become coin collectors and change their ideas of coins but in the meantime, why not. There are companies that are making money selling doctored up coins and if there were none, they would be out of buisness or just not make as much. As long as there are enough untouched coins of each type for collectors, why not a few doctored up ones for the general populace? I think doctoring up coinage is similar to copies of the old cars, copies of famous swords, etc. If there were none of those either, many people just could never afford the real thing.

There's a vile horrific hatred feeling for "dipped", "plated", or "colorized" U.S. coins with me.......... The Silver Eagle is a beautiful coin ........JUST THE WAY IT IS !... It does not need "enhancing" ! I voted any enhancement is bad!!
