I found a 1986 D Jefferson nickel coin roll hunting that has an extra thick rim. Could anyone tell me how much it is worth and why it has a thick rim?

Making a ring out of a coin "the old" way is called spooning...you hit the edge of a coin with a spoon till it flares out a few mm and then drill out the center...there's your ring.
