Looks like post-strike damage. Notice how the metal curls up on the outside of the indent - that's indicative of something pressing into the coin post mint and smushing the metal up around it's edges. A doubled device would not result in an indent in the coin's field, so it's definitely not that. It's not a strike-through either since the do not have curled metal on the edges since the presence of the die fields prevent the metal from curling up.

I guess this issue could have resided on the working hub, but .. I dunno. I'm honestly not sure how to definitively say whether a defect like this was resident on the hub or post-mint. Regardless, this would not have been an effect originating on the die - it would have to have been post-mint or on the hub.

Pros - how to know whether an effect like this was post mint or on the hub?

This is a doubled die - one of MANY doubled dies on recent cent reverses. Current count is in the hundreds for sure, most are simply too minor to be collectible. This one, however, does meet the minimum criteria for listing as a collectible doubled die.

How tot ell that this is in the die and not damage? Simple - three things. First, the area is raised, which means it's not damage. Second, the edges of the raised area belnd with the other details on the coin. Damage will not do this. Third, there are a large number of similar anomalies that are verified doubled dies. If it quacks like a duck...

Wait ... OMG ... it's raised? Gosh darn my eyes deceived me - I saw it as concave with raised edges. Does anyone else's eyes do this?

What year and mint mark is this coin?

I think the 2006D LMC is one that has this exact DD column on the reverse.

Initial post in the thread states it's a 2004D.

Additionally, there are hundreds and hundreds of similar minor doubled dies. Matching two coins together based on the merits of the doubling alone would be about like trying to cut a 70 foot oak tree down with fingernail clippers.

The perverbial Skil saw in this case would be markers, both obverse and reverse that would bring us far closer to rounding this down to a match for any given die. I doubt, however, that we have an example of this exact die listed anywhere.

Sorry- I missed the 2004D annotation.

I'll qualify my statement then :

"The 2006D LMC has a "SIMILAR" DD to the right of Lincoln on the Reverse.

I have found 5 of these "bar on column" variety's in the last 9 months I have 2 that are large like this one and the rest being a little smaller, the ones I have found range from 2001 to 2007 so they must be pretty common... so keep searching!
have fun, jp324
