Hi all - So I just picked up this gorgeous 1867 3CS - my series of choice. I did so recognizing there are a couple of obverse defects that might bring a details grade of scratches. But the toning, luster, and frosting are really appealing to me. I'm still very happy with the coin but I'd love to hear what folks out in CCF think. Overall grade? Will it grade details? Thanks! [And apologies for the photos - best I can do with my current set up].

Unfortunately your "current set up" just doesn't result in a sharp enough image to make grading reasonable.

What is up with the blast pattern on the reverse?

if you can post better photos. maybe try natural lighting. based on these photos this coin could be harshly cleaned or polished

Unfortunately better photos are unlikely to happen. This is natural lighting. My impression is that the coin is neither polished nor cleaned, although I've been fooled before (but not on 3CS). I was mostly concerned about scratches... the worst of the pics was the best angle to get the scratch near/into the A in the legend. There's also a small scratch in the top of the star over the device, but I'm less worried about that. When I submit I'll get it imaged and can then share PCGS's image. Thanks for input.

Also, @BStrauss3 - I think that may just be bc the rev is really hard to get into focus. It's at an angle in the slab and I'm not able to capture rev well at all.

An NNC slab (I know, I know... I ignored their "grading" and bought the coin, definitely not the slab). I'm pretty darn sure hairlines/scratches/contact marks are on the coin not plastic.

If it's NNC, then you have to crack it to submit it anyway. Crack it now and take better photos.
Also, wear gloves when touching the NNC plastic - never know where that garbage has been.
For my records, I'd love a full slab obv/rev pic.

The overall look suggests (pretty) retoning over cleaned surfaces, with a strange granularity to part of the obverse, and the reverse in particular worries me because it shows lots of contact marks and a notable lack of luster compared to the obverse.
This is a scarce date to begin with -- only 4000 business strikes -- and many, but not all, "problem free" examples have been graded and certified by PCGS, ANACS, or NGC at some point. My fear is that you will find that this coin does not "full grade" due to cleaning, environmental damage, altered surfaces, or some combination thereof. There are good coins out there in NNC holders, but they are needles in a giant haystack compared to the number of problem coins in NNC holders.

Thanks all. I appreciate the input. I'll report back when I have better pics and/or grade. Even with an impaired example I'm content. This was definitely an informed buy re risks :-)

My gut says cleaned and retoned - but possibly not badly cleaned since you say it looks nice in hand. Quote: Also, wear gloves when touching the NNC plastic - never know where that garbage has been.
