 Today I bought a 1913-S Type Two Buffalo nickel in VG-8 from H. Berk in Chicago. Since I don't consider the three legged 1937-D or the over dates to be valid date/mint/types, this completes my set. I managed to download a picture of the obverse: Image:  buffalo.jpg12.88 KB I did not get the reverse downloaded before they deleted the image, but it is easily an F-12 with a partial horn. Any ideas on how to plug the holes in my Dansco for the three legged and the 18/17? I considered just buying some blank nickel pages, but the date and mintmarks wouldn't be printed. Is there a two sided album fron another maker that excludes these two error coins? Thanks.

I have IHC, Buffalo nickels, and Mercury dimes in one "generic" Dansco binder using blank cent, nickel, and dime pages. Since you have an actual Buffalo album, I would get some heavy cardboard and cut two nickel size pieces to fit the holes. You can try to colour match the "plugs" to the Dansco pages with some gloss paint. Edited by jbuck

Most are F-12 or better, with a full four digit date. I have a few BU coins in later dates. I went down on this one to a VG-8 grade because it was problem free and I could buy it for less than $400. I will post a picture of the whole album in a few weeks. I think it looks pretty nice.

Congrats, and nice going on completing your folder. I was happy just to plug the last hole on the third page of my old Whitman album today - with a '31-S.

nice job! As far as the holes go. Have you considered an inxpensive reproduction off ebay. I see a lot of these made for expensive key dates. It wouldn't be like the real coin, but much less expensive and it'll fill the holes! |

I thought about that Mopar, but buying a reproduction kind of acknowledges that those holes belong in the album and I don't think that they do. They are plainly error coins, not deliberately issued by the mint. I don't have any objection to anyone who wants and can afford to include them, but I don't. They might also want to include all the other Buffalo mis-strikes and over dates that have been uncovered in this series. It would be hard to know where to stop. Thanks.

Congo-rats Okie.  I am very envious. I am getting very close to completing my set, but I still have both of the 13s's to go, along with a few other holes. I am also trying to upgrade any of the less attractive ones when I come across a good replacement. It is a good series, not cheap, but expensive enough to be challenging, I am really enjoying it. |

Fill the holes with fakes? Nope. Nearly all of the holes I filled with coins in circulation, mostly during the '50's, and pristine fillers would stand out like the proverbial sore thumb. I might as well file down slugs and draw a stick bison on them with a Sharpie and add the date! So additions to my buff collection will mostly run from G to AF and fit right in with the rest of them.

I just thought, why not throw a dateless buffalo in those holes? You might be able to find a decent pair that wont stick out. I do agree with not putting a reproduction in there. I too would rather see the hole. |
