I picked up this coin a little while ago online. At first glace it doesn't look that great. It has this dark "cruddy" (a numismatic term of art) appearance. But, if you look close under the crud, there is some really nice detail to it. I would be curious to hear any opinions you might have on the coin and how it might grade.

You might want to try an acetone soak?

Yes cruddy corrosion setting in . I would say nothing can be done to make this coin look better without ruining it anymore . Too bad 1888 V-Nickel is a semi-key .

Thanks everyone for all the helpful comments. So, if I take John's advice and try a little acetone on it and things improve, does that negatively affect the coin?

Well then, I guess I'm off to Youtube to study up on Acetone techniques.

It's a good idea to learn about the benefits of acetone, but using acetone on this coin would be like putting your rusted junker through a carwash.

This looks like a tough one and maybe beyond help but if you are willing to try acetone you should also try xylene. Here's something I learned from our Bad Thad "Acetone is a polar, organic solvent. It works differently from xylene since xylene is a non-polar, organic solvent". Based on that advice I use both Acetone and Xylene.

Warning. Be careful using Xylene as the fumes are nasty and it should only be used in a well ventilated area. And it's very strong so be careful about handling it.

Good Luck!

Well, I gave Miss Liberty a 10 minute acetone bath last night. I think it improved the obverse slightly (not sure the photos do it justice). The reverse still looks pretty bad ... only very minor improvements in a few spots. You can compare for yourself.

But thanks again everyone for your comments. I greatly appreciate it.
