DDs are struck from dies that are improperly hubbed and actually have the doubled image engraved in their surface. As such, most DD varieties will have anywhere from thousands to millions of completely identical strikes circulating (depending on how quickly the mint catches the mistake and removes the die from production). That means that most significant (and even insignificant) doubling varieties will already be known and documented from other examples if the coin is more than a couple years old. You can compare your find to other die varieties on websites like varietyvista and wexler's die varieties. If yours doesn't *exactly* match one of the known die varieties for that coin, odds are it's Machine Doubling or Die Deterioration.
