Buffalo 5 Cent Strange Gashes Around Rim.

I would dismiss this as damage if not for the fact that these gashes cause the rim to slightly bleed into the face of the coin as if it were melted though I could just be underestimating the malleability of the coin.

These gashes only extend through one corner of the edge, it's a pretty hard to see on the second photo.

@xanthum, first welcome to CCF. Second, your initial assessment was correct--this coin was damaged. Perhaps it saw circulation after those gouges were made in the rim and this has caused the metal to look a little like it started out there.

It was a common practice to modify Buffalo nickels. They are commonly referred to as hobo nickels. Some of them are unbelievable. These are gashes made by a knife.
