The reason I ask is because I just bought three coins fairly cheap, in what appear to be PCI holders, and the seller said that they were graded by J L Stanton. Due to ebay rules, the seller didn't show the whole holder. Anybody know anything about this?

JT yes he was the president at the end, as far as the signature series labels some were seen by the expert some weren't. Condor would be able to the tell the story better than I whenever he sees this.

JT Stanton was a highly regarded numismatist who died last year.

Yes, J T Stanton, correction made, sorry. Thanks for the link basebal21. The three Lincoln cents I purshased are all varieties. Am assuming that whether he actually saw the coin or not, if it has his name on it, there's a good chance it's accurate. Am really looking forward to seeing the holders. Haven't seen one before.

That's what I was hoping condor would see to explain in more detail. Supposedly from what I have read before there was a time when they did not see it and the labels were used anyways and there was a time when they did. The holder itself would likely help to figure it out

I have just recently been searching for his ebay offerings, having purchased from him several times before, and found nothing whatsoever. Now I know why. RIP J.T.

Found this very informative thread:

I also have a handful of the Rick Tomaska Signature Series. Will have to dig them out. Apparently they are from the mid 90's.

JT also did attribution work occasionally for SEGS in the early days of that company, IIRC. JT was a great numismatist and greatly missed by me, he and my friend Rick Ellis were quite close and I always enjoyed my time with him at the ANA SUmmer Seminars in the 80's and 90's. His basement bull sessions were legendary, and he was also a great supporter of the YN auction, having his underwear stolen and autographed by many then auctioned off each year, oh the memories one just can't forget.

PCI had Signature Series slabs twice over the years. The first time was in the early years under the first owner. Those were the ones where the experts disavowed the services saying they were not being sent the coins for examination and PCI was just using pre-signed labels. Their second series was done while Staton was President of the firm (not the owner) shortly before PCI folded for the first time and the assets were sold to David Lawrence. The Signature Series ended that time because due to financial problems at PCI the experts were not being paid for their examinations.
