I was looking at this series, (wildwinds photo below) of Phillipi with statues of Julius Caesar and Augustus. This got me thinking, the vast majority of ancient coins don't show scenes that actually were visible to a person in a city, so mostly you see a God or Goddess or a major mythology theme etc. But if you do have an image of a real scene these are in some respects photos from a time we can't possibly see photos from. (Assuming you can cross reference with some literature of someone mentioning the statue or building.) So I think a person could make a collection of "Actual Scenes from the Ancient World Depicted on Coins". And you would not have to spend that much as there can't be that many. For each coin you would have a card referencing some literature that talks about that temple or statue etc.

@lks, yes an interesting idea. I have only tried to do this once, and it was on a modern quarter:

a book on this topic -- Monumental Coins : Building and Structures on Ancient Coinage by Marvin Tameanko

"Monumental Coins" is a bountiful tapestry of numismatics, history and architecture that explores the buildings found on ancient coins and the historical and cultural importance of these structures. In addition to a comprehensive gallery of actual coin photos, coins are illustrated by line drawings to reveal fine structural details. Computer-generated plans of the buildings, along with freehand illustrations of building reconstructions allow complete understanding of these ancient wonders."

Victor;

Well that is a definitive study! Plus it would make a good road map for a collector as just like with the 12 Caesars you could plan your acquisitions and just have a constant search across selling platforms for your wish list in case they come up cheap enough for your price point. Thanks! (A person can also consider a separate collection of ancient examples of mechanics like images of this plow from 3rd century BC Kentoripai.)

That would be a fun collecting theme, but like nearly every broad theme in ancient numismatics, probably impossible to complete! Like Victor said, a lot of Imperial coins feature "from life" buildings or statues, many of which (especially the Colosseum issues of Titus, which I would consider to be the crown jewel of such a collection!) are in extremely high demand and thus pricey to match.

And that's not even going into the probably thousands of provincial coins which feature temples, statues, etc.

As a side thought - we know that the numerous "Farnese Hercules" coins depict an actual statue, because archaeologists found it. Considering the static poses of various gods and goddesses over the centuries (Zeus in exactly the same pose from before Alexander's day until Maximinus II's Antioch civic coinage), we really cannot know how many coins depict actual objects versus a standardized allegorical image.
