ebay just keeps getting better and better. This seller is offering ancient coins from an "original" Lloyd's 1949 bank bag. According to the seller, ancient Greek and Roman coins were still in circulation and being redeemed by banks as late as the 1940s! Who knew?

It doesn't pass any rational sniff test nor a more complex "Google Search". Deceptive and unethical for sure, but it is creative. There's that.

WHatever the story behind the provenance of the bag of coins, I'm pretty sure such "mystery lots" of coins are against ebay policy.

Either sell us the whole bag, or show us the five specific coins we're bidding on. That's ebay policy.

As for the "ancient coins in circulation" line, it's certainly true that in times of a shortage of official coin (such as in the 1790s in England), "found" ancient coins would get cleaned up and put into circulation. But they'd never have been officially recognized, exchanged or redeemed by a bank; any such objects deposited would have been treated as scrap metal / bullion - or, more likely, have been souvenired by bank staff.

I am considering a theory that these coins were left at a bank for safe keeping.
Many decades pass and the original record of deposit could have been lost, when a bank was bombed.

Now, the bank has a disposal problem, and the current bank officials have no idea at all about ancient coins.

I've seen more outlandish claims on ebay before. At least the price is resembling something reasonable, not $20-30 per coin, sight unseen.

I usually get a chuckle when I see these power flippers act like they're numismatic experts - claiming that they searched through 12 reference books on Greek coins and a significant portion of these are unpublished rarities. Puh-leaze.
