I'm trying to figure out what is happening at bottom of the horizontal line of the 4 in this 1941 Washington quarter I just picked up. I've seen this a lot in Lincoln Cents, and I'm quite sure it's not doubling. It almost looks like something was wrong with that part of the die, or slight planchet lamination, it's hard to catch a good picture of it, though. If anyone can tell from the pics, I'd apprecaite any ideas!!

to CCF!

It looks like Die Deterioration Doubling ( DDD) with a die chip.

There was an engraving issue on the 41 of the 1941 quarters that is similar to what is found on the 44 of 1944 Lincoln cents.
This may be what you are picking up on.

Thanks for that input. Now that I think about it, when I researching it a few years back when I had been seeing it on the Lincoln cents, I vaguely remember running into DDD as a possibility. I wasn't aware of the engraving issue for that year. Either way, it's hardly noticeable to the naked eye, and no one will probably ever know it's there....just drives meet nuts when I don't know how to describe what happened to a coin

Master die doubling:
Washington-Silver-Quarter,-Unc-1941-Question

Another coin PCGS miss-attributed. Supposed to be a large 's', instead it is a small 's':

Okay coop, that's exactly it. Retouched master die. Does that still fall I under the broader scope of DDD? or are they completely different?

Actually it is normal for that year. Basically die wear does affect it, but if you note, all the examples I found on PCGS looked like this. So I determined, it was not a working hub issue, but a master die issue that was touched up. (Because all the same spots were affected on each of the coins)

The more questions you ask, I'll share with what I see on your coin. I'm getting closer to 10K images on my image host soon. I enjoy rather than giving a yes or no answer, an explaination of what I see on your coin. That way you will know more of what you are seeing on the next search. My Motto:
