Help To ID Ancient Coin - Pegasus? Standing Figure?

Brummagem Valued Member United States 128 Posts	Posted 06/16/2019 12:20 pm I have been searching to identify this coin for years. Can anyone lead me in the right direction? I think it could be Pegasus and a Standing Figure but it is crude. Also the beads on the border are interesting. I believe it is bronze and somewhat thin flan- about 21mm & 2.9g. Thank you! Ben Pillar of the Community United Kingdom 4208 Posts	Posted 06/16/2019 1:00 pm Looks like a winged lion - that would suggest it is the Winged Lion of St Mark, especially with the halo. I can't say I recognise the type, but it is reminiscent of the composition of medieval venetian soldinos. Report this Post to the Staff

The figure on the reverse reminds me of Shiva and his bull on some late Kushan coins from India. They never used a lion, which makes me think this is medieval, maybe from the Christian East? Spence Moderator United States 34419 Posts	Posted 06/16/2019 2:50 pm Whether it is a winged lion or Pegasus, it appears to be nimbate. Nimbate lions were found on some Reformation (and later) coins from Venice. I don't see a good match though in a quick look on numista. Sorry that I can't be more helpful.
