The dark area is not just discoloration, it is actually a depressed groove. Don't see how it could be PSD because the L in LIBERTY is unaffected!

That is interesting. Looks like the L is unaffected. Wait for some experts.

To me it looks like the Wrapping Machine Damage, the lower arm of the L looks slightly flattened.
Just noted that there is another area affected below the Bust as well. so yeh the combination of the damaged area and toning has changed it to what it looks now.

Seems pretty deep for a wrapping machine.

I don't think it is Wrapping Machine Damage. Looks interesting. The reverse looks like a platting error.Maybe the obverse is some kind of platting error also.

Does the "L" look fully coppered..or is the horizonal leg of the "L" dark/black like the groove we're seeing..? If the leg is dark/black, I'd have to guess...plating issue..prior to strike..

Editted: Agreeing with John1...but I'm wondering where he sees the reverse issue?

The "bullseye" look. NGC slabbed one that looks like that and it was discussed here on CCF. I have saved a few I have found CRHing that are in nice condition. Some say it is damage caused by a cigarette lighter.

Looks like wrapper damage and the reverse damage by a lighter.

From my view point the "L" looks over the incused line...planchet damage.

The L of LIBERTY doesn't appear damaged by the incuse curve. The anomaly under the bust at VDB looks similar but with a different coloration and thickness (this part is probably PSD).

I would say defective planchet (before or after the plating process).
The darker color could be discoloration from circulation.

Looking again on the computer (Previously I was looking on my phone) , the line looks like the planchet was damage before the strike on the Liberty area as the 'L' is not affected.
