Thanks for all of the input everyone, and congrats on your 12,000th post basebal21! I'm thinking I might just send it in through the dealer to try and save a little bit of money. My 55 has a bit of verdigris and so it just made me think about conserving both.

I mean I'm happy because I'm finally completing sets. I finished my Walking Liberty halves set last month on 5/19, and the 21's are only about good I presume since I can't read the 19. And I finished my Buffalo nickel set last week on 6/13 with the purchase of a 13D Type 2 and a 13S Type 2. The 13S is NGC slabbed G6, which I realize may seem silly to some to slab that grade, but I didn't slab it, and it was my first slabbed coin, and it completed a set, so again I'm happy. And lastly, I just got this 09S VDB on 6/20, which again, completed my Lincoln Wheat cent set. Perhaps this one will remain as a hole filler, and then I'll buy a better slabbed one in the future. Now I just need a 16D to complete my Mercury dime set, and based on what they cost, and the low grade nature of my sets, I'll probably just get an AG3 slabbed.

So I want to add a little info to this story. Perhaps someone remembers me asking the forum how many pennies would fit in a 5 gallon jug, or perhaps you remember the Cud coin that I found in said jug. Well here it is 4 years later, and I've finally taken the pennies to the bank. I carried in the first two jugs to the bank which amounted to 61 and change. The second 2 jugs were 64 and change. And the last one was 44 and change. The lady said, I need to double check this, "I've never seen it come out exactly even." So those 5 jugs amounted to 17,000 pennies even! (aside from the kickbacks). So that was $170. Then the box furthest to the right is another 2500 pennies, and then I had extra rolls that amounted to 500 more. So now I was up to 20,000 pennies, or $200. The other four boxes are 10,000 copper memorial cents, that I sold for $150. So I'm up to $350. I also have a second set of Lincoln's that is 90% complete (126/140) that I have someone interested in buying for $100. So, yes, I paid $450 for my details S VDB, but how much did I really pay for it

So I guess maybe I won't sell that second set of Lincoln's? I already used my cash to pay for the svdb, knowing that I would recoup the money by selling the copper pennies and this set. At this point, I've used $350 in pennies that came from the jug, and $100 of my own cash. So do you think I should just keep this set? The best coins it has are: 09 VDB (VF), 11D (G), 12D (G), 22D (G), 23S (G), and 26S (VG).

Personally, I would, unless you need the money for something immediately. I have 6 sets of Lincolns in various stages of completion. My 'main' set is the one listed in my signature.

Nice. The 16S in this set is also VF, so that's a decent coin as well. Well I'll be keeping it for now.

Hey congratulations on completing all those sets it is quite an accomplishment you should be proud of.
But if it were me I would have waited and added another $100-$200 to the cash you got from all the pennies and bought a slightly better coin, perhaps a G-VG in a straight grade holder. And saved yourself the headache. For now though I would just stick it in the album, fill that hole and just enjoy the accomplishment of completing your set.
As far as selling it here's my thought: I honestly wouldn't spend another cent trying to conserve or grade it. I would take as many high quality images and list it for sale with a buy it now or best offer and try to at least get back what you already put into it. Then take the money and get a problem free coin like I described above.

Thanks Harry. Hindsight's 20/20 I just wanted an S VDB and I wasn't educated enough to know that this coin would be a details coin. I guess this is an example of paying for my education Also, I'm a little worried about marketability if I don't have it authenticated. Well I just threw it on Craigslist for $500 to see if I get any bites.

Joe , I'm sure now you realize you made a big mistake with that king of Lincoln wheat cents because you failed to educate yourself on self grading whether raw or slabbed . It's not the end of the world . We have all made a similar mistakes at one time or another . I'm still kicking myself in the butt for some of my early boo-boos . In my honest opinion get rid of that S-VDB as fast as you can and save up for a PCGS or NGC Straight graded VG-8 or better .

I just overlooked the blemishes because they seemed small to me and were not very distracting from the overall look of the coin. Some coins really look like crap. I don't think this coin looks like crap. On the contrary, I think it looks pretty decent overall. More than half of the wheat stalks are visible so I just figured it to be VG. I guess the devil really is in the details.
