Large Date (Coop's image, smaller size)

1970-S-Small-Date-Lincoln-Cent?

edit: just noticed I'm approaching a round number of posts, which calls for a contest or giveaway or something. Any suggestions? I have some decent "culls" from my 'o9-'59 series or a bunch of dead ants (US Mint issued ants)? Have to thinks about it. It's a pitifully small ## of posts but it goes to the point that a fella learns more by listening than talking ...

Would like to know why this is not a small date? The obverse die is a different die style. Checkout this link:
http://www.varietyvista.com/01b%20L...arieties.htm
Note die styles:

Note the inside curve of the '9'? On the bottom image? That is the die with the small dates. The upper one is the one for the large dates. Note that one is the one that is used for all the other mints and most for San Francisco. But the lower one is the small dates. Note that is only shows 1970-S Dies that some used this die style? So both styles were used on the 'S' mints, but the curve is different on the curl of the '9'. So what do I look for first on the small date style dies:
The bottom of the '7'. Note on your coin it is lower than the '0' on the date? That is the large date. Here is a side by side with all the differences between the two styles that year/mint.

You might want to save these images or take a screen shot for your own educational files. That way you will have the information and not have to look all over the forum for this information. If you are looking at auctions for one of these, you can use this trick to find out if they are selling you the right on. You can use a business card and place it on the image of you computer screen:

This will show you if the '7' is level or lower. (Level= small dates, Lower= large dates) Often on the images of the 1970-S on auctions, the date will be angled and it marks it harder to tell, but the business card will always show you which one it is. Hope this helps.

Coop,

That is an absolutely fabulous link, the Variety Vista page. It's a page that I'd missed and cements my decision to find a new microscope. Thank you!

The site is setup a bit different. To find the obverse and reverse styles and mint mark styles is in the first area of the doubled dies. Took me a while to figure out were it was, but got it now.

Definitely a Large Date. The zero is not even with the seven.

Got those but I'm not seeing anything on the '09-58 (wheat) reverse variation. I saw the bit about adjusting for strike but it's hard to believe they'd forgo any tweaking on the reverse. After all, they were artists.

edit: Nevermind, I found it!
