The split in the crown appears to lie along the same axis as the anomaly on the obverse that runs from roughly 1:30 to 7:00 and displaces the halves of the shield. On the obverse, it seems to go completely across the coin, but on the reverse, only about half way (the crown and most of the way down that arm of the cross).
It makes me think the same issue in the coining process may have caused both, though I have no idea what might have happened, and why the effects would be so different on the two faces of the coin.
