Love this coin! Recent pick up from a ccf member...In hand the reverse has lovely detail..But the portrait gives out a sense of strength and confidence! Really pleased to add this to my Sassanian collection .. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peroz_IPeroz I (459-484 AD) 25.6mm / 4.05gr Silver Drachm. Obverse- Crowned and cuirassed bust of Peroz right, ribbons rising from shoulders, Degraded Pahlavi legend. Reverse- Fire altar decorated with ribbons, attendants standing either side, star left of flames, crescent at right, 'PEROZ' in Pahlavi on left, mint 'WH' right. Mint Veh Ardashir.

Nice coin Paul. The obverse is typical if not a little better than most.

The Sylloge of Sasanian coins only lists one WH mint type from year seven. Date on you coin could be that but with the missing letter I couldn't verify that.

Great coin! Congratulations! I think the way the thin bear hugs the jawline is what gives the portrait additional strength. You gotta' love the headgear!

Valkash is on my list also, his coins tend to be expensive.

Paul the only other king that I'm aware of the used the double ring obverse without crescent and star is Balash 484-488. If it's him that's a rare coin. Who are the two you are thinking of?

Nice selection Paul As for the second coin, I agree I have a feeling that might be Balash; I think he is the only one who used the Peroz-style attendants and had Azure Mazda's face on the fire altar bowl. Rare is indeed right - I had my eye on one on ebay, but bidding topped out at a little over $150 - I like Sassanian coins, but for now am trying to keep new acquisitions to only screaming good deals.

Thanks Steve I'm really pleased with this one.. Ron I wasn't really thinking of any other ruler than Balash. Every thing I see leads me to him and was just making sure I wasn't missing something and that more experienced collectors such as yourself came to the same identification. I'm really interested in buying this coin, but I only want to buy it once. Its from a very reputable dealer whom I've bought from many times before but its misattributed in with a group of Peroz coins...So the price is cool or scaringly cheap!... Question to all ..What are the main defining points that identify this coin as Balash....And are there any concerns that make you feel its not? Thanks Paul

Paul the only concern I may have is that I'm not sure that any of his coins were struck with the LYM mint mark. No way of checking. Other than that I confident it's him.

Thanks Ron really appreciated... Quote: Paul the only concern I may have is that I'm not sure that any of his coins were struck with the LYM mint mark. No way of checking. Other than that I confident it's him. That's good news Ron thanks...Here's a LYM Ardashir mintmark coin of Balash at a recent Pegasi auction May 2019...Starting price $525...It didn't sell!
