I am wanting to seperate the copper from the zinc. At what weight does the seperation begin. The Philly mint has the weight going up to 3.16 to 2.42, there are several in the 3.00 to 3.07 range. The Denver mint is about the same. I was just wondering, I might have a 1982 D small date, but the weight is making it confusing.

When one is talking +/- on a Penny going from copper to zinc, are you looking at 20 to 30 percent off the 3.10 wt, then it would be zinc. Or does anyone know.

1982 D copper (3.1g) small date is the one you're looking for. If you do find it, please post pictures of it as they are rare coins and very difficult to find. Good luck in your search!

There are a bunch varieties for that year I believe. Both Philly and Denver have zinc and copper versions All the ones that weigh ~2.5 should.be zinc.

Copper plated zinc should weigh between 2.4 and 2.6 grams
The solid copper/brass coins should weigh between 2.98 and 3.24 grams.
You may find some coins that weigh very slightly more than the 2.6 figure or very slightly less than the 2.98 figure but the ranges I mentioned should identify better than 95% of all of them no questions asked.
