Found this in a bank roll recently. I ruled out acid treatment, as the weight of the coin matches that of a typical Copper Lincoln. Might this be struck through cloth, or something else? Would like to read the experts opinions on this!

The sharpness of detail on the reverse would indicate a struck-thru. Whatever was in the way in effect made the planchet thicker, resulting in better detail.

Struck through late stage die cap. Pretty scarce and very nice. No idea of value.

Yep, It's struck through a late stage die cap. I would guestimate a $20.00 to $25.00 coin as it does have some circulation wear and slight effects of corrosion.

Thanks,
Bill

coppernickeldaddy,
Congrats!
VERY NICE COIN

I had the same question about a coin I had found in July while roll searching. "196LMC what caused this on the Obverse and left the Reverse untouched?"

Turns out it was a struck through late stage die cap.

Thanks Bill: Was wondering what these coins might be worth as a premium. In the ballpark circa $25.00?

Circulated with a few marks and dirt, about $20.00 each.

Thanks,
Bill

I was thrilled to find it was really something collectible; you find so much searching rolls that is obviously tampered with, whether maliciously with financial gain in mind or just vandalism.
