I picked this 1881-S Morgan dollar from my lcs the other day. Even though 81-S is one of the easiest dates to find in high grade, I loved the prooflike reverse of this coin. I think if I cracked it out and sent it into NGC, it would grade as an MS64 Star, just as one side is prooflike. However, I would hate to crack out an older PCGS slab. I would like to get your input on whether or not it would be worth doing? Thanks for your thoughts!

Not worth it. PCGS green label is going to be as good if not better than an NGC star anyways, not to mention 81-S 64s even in full PL are a dime a dozen. You'd have to get a 65 PL for it to be worth it
Rest in Peace

enjoy it in the PCGS plastic. One sided PL are common for 1880 & 1881-S.

Leave well enough alone on this common date.

Send it in to CAC. You keep the desirable holder and if you are right you get a gold sticker which would add more value than 65 in a newer holder.

General thinking is that coins still in OGH's are properly graded.
If not, they would have been cracked out years ago.

Is that 100%.
Nope, but it's a good guide.

I agree with the upthread comments.

The reverse is beautiful. What attracted you to the coin will attract others to the coin, as well. There isn't any need for a different slab to showcase the coin. The market for eye appeal Morgans isn't a sight-unseen Bluesheet transaction. It is a collector, with coin in hand, admiring the coin.

Attractive reverse but I'd keep it in the slab.
