I bid on a Silver Eagle in a display. What can I say; I like coin displays. I didn't expect to win, but I was the only bidder. I won it at a good price. After doing some checking, I have a 1996 which is a key date. So, I have to say that was a good purchase. *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

Not a bad buy. Can the holder be opened easily without damaging it? If so,I would check the coin to make sure it is genuine by weighing it and maybe a tissue test...just sayin' If you want to share what it cost you, please do. John1

Hey John good advise. The first thing I did was open it and check the coin. I did the magnet test and tissue test and it passed.

I am bumbed out. I did some additional testing on the coin. The coin passed the magnet test, the tissue test, and it weighs 31g. However, when I did the ping test, it clearly did not pass. Should I consider this a fake?

Hmmm...I think you are over analyzing this ASE. I never heard of the "ping" test and, after research, found out that it is not a reliable tool for determining an authentic silver coin. With that said greatamericancoinco has a crap load of these (same holder) for sale at a significantly inflated price ($80+). I would accept it as genuine and in the future save yourself any worry and effort and get a TPG authenticated coin. You will sleep better and save time for around 60 bucks (1996 NGC 69) I am not a fan of graded bullion at all but also not that focused on performing every possible test on every coin I buy. If I was I would by a slabbed coin and move on... I would not be exaggerating to say I probably have over a couple thousand ASE's both raw in rolls (bullion), graded and in OGP

The ring test is a reliable indicator of coin composition but is generally considered unreliable because people do not know how to do it correctly. I agree that you should not worry about your coins authenticity, especially if it passed magnet (conductivity), weight, and tissue test.

Another opinion... Counterfeit coins.. These fall into two groups: Those made to fool merchants and those made to fool collectors. While a good deal of suspicion if not all in out paranoia is rampant let us calmly look at the possibilities For an American Silver Eagle.... Are they counterfeited for commerce? No, they do not circulate. Are they counterfeited for collectors? Not likely. They are common and inexpensive - not likely candidates for counterfeiting. Let us continue to teach new collectors about the easy methods of testing.. But let's not feed into this paranoia. There are plenty of coins to be suspicious of.... The 1909-S VDB cent come to mind. But the ASE? REALLY?

matthewvincent: Very well stated... ...but, to be fair, there are a bunch of ASE fakes out there (I have some)...fake not because of the coin but because of the silver Comes down to buying from seasoned dealers/sellers and not from those shipping from "China"

I am the first to state that I don't know enough about coins yet. That is my reason for joining the forum. The ping test maybe unreliable but, this coin did not even ping; it just made a dull thud. So, to be on the safe side I am sending it back at my cost.
