Last week my family went on vacation. We arrived at the airport early in the morning and promptly got into the security line. It was a little hectic and I was trying to help my family get everything placed in the trays to go through the x-ray. As I'm about ready to step through, I remember that I had my loop in my pocket. So I quickly put it in the tray with some of my kids' items and go through. As the plane is taking off I suddenly remember that I never picked it back up and none of my kids snagged it either. I was a little bummed. The loop (a nice 10x look in a leather case) belonged to my mother. She got it back when she was in college for a Geology class. I have been using it for my coins for many years now.
A week later, as we are flying home, I decide that I'll stop in and ask to see if they have a lost and found on the outside chance that someone turned it in. We landed in the evening and traffic was light at the security check point where we previously entered. I walk up to four TSA agents standing away from the line and ask if they have a lost and found. One of them asks what I lost. I start to describe my loop. Suddenly all of them break into smiles and start telling me that they remember it, it was the coolest thing they had seen in a long time, and that several of them even tried it out. Needless to say I left the airport in very good spirits.
I have since contacted their lost and found, they do have my loop, and we are working on getting it back home.

Here in Austin, all the stuff that's confiscated from the security checkpoints at Bergstrom (well, most of it I suppose) goes to a government surplus store a couple miles outside of the airport. For as many cheap Gerber knives as I've turned in after forgetting to put them in my checked bag, I've purchased some really nice pocket knives at a steep discount from this shop. some require a little sharpening or de-gunking, but with the right tools that's easy enough to do and well worth the savings.
That's just anecdotal of course and I really hope you get your mom's loupe back, CS.

I'm not panicking yet. But, I lost it on June 22nd and they said they only keep things for 30 days. Pretty soon I'll start calling them everyday. of course the number they gave is one that goes straight to voice-mail. (me trying to break through to get to my loop)
