Here's my Victoria 1896 5 cent, given to me with a grade of AU on the flip, but I don't know - still seems too worn down on the hair and leaves for me. Also my variety question:
I saw a past sale on ebay where there is a mention of "slanted 96".. it isn't in Trends or in my 6 yr old copy of Charlton. In fact, beyond this seller I don't see a mention of it anywhere! Is this a thing? If it is, do I have it? Thank you for all your expertise..

Yes there are at least two "sloping 6" varieties.
You likely have to look in the back of the 2010 Charlton's to find them.
Not much demand right now for these kinds of date varieties thus very little or no premium.
Definitely to much obverse wear for AU grade.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

It's definitely a weak strike. The mint luster likely is what persuaded the seller to call it AU.

@darcyrmt, fish scales are all over the lot on strike quality.

Your 1880-H has a solid strike and honest circulation, with a solid VF-35 and borderline EF-40 grade. Your 1896 has a soft strike. (Notice the denticles on the obverse.) What you are seeing is a mixture of the soft strike and modest circulation. That's why the 1896 has plenty of original luster.

I agree with @SHAFTA9a and @cdngmt, and also think the 1896 is in the EF-40 to EF-45 range, even though its appearance is similar to the wear on the 1880-H.

Both are really nice, collectible coins. Thank you for sharing them with us!
