I actually go by the space between the laurel leaf and the "I" of DEI. An Obv 3 touches(or almost touches) the "I". On an Obv 2, there is a definite gap there. It looks to have been cleaned at some time and the Obv photo isn't real clear. I'd say at least a 35, but don't know if it'll reach a 40.

Where is the best site to visit to learn the type of variety detail you are discussing for this coin?

I'd give it a VF-30, it has been dipped at some point for sure but probably market acceptable for most given the modest value and grade. Between obv 2 and 3 I will usually go to the forehead first as it's always present even on lowgrade coins.

I'm with @okiecoiner on markers and grade. Your coin is a solid VF-35 and on the bubble for EF-40. I don't know of a good online resource for the Obverse 2 and Obverse 3 markers. The Saskatoon Coin Club has Jim MacKenzie's wonderful marker photographs for many varieties, but not (yet) for the 1880-H five cent.

Again, for the best marker, look at the gap between the laurel leaf on the Queen and the I in DEI .. it's never wrong.

Agree VF-30, likely old cleaning.

Lightly cleaned some time ago, like your microscope, may reach EF

Re: my photos, the full coin shots are just with my phone, the close up is with the microscope. Couldn't get full coin shots with it, it was too finicky with the different depths within the field.. Thanks for the info and grades, I'm unsure about the leaf coming close to the I in "DEI".. below are photos from the Saskatoon Coin Club's site, Obv2 is the grey one, Obv3 is sort of sepia toned... getting these pics close to the same size, I have a tough time with a difference in the leaf-letter I gap. In fact, I'm more drawn to a huge difference in denticle size instead! (Has that ever been mentioned as an identification marker?)

VF30 The forehead is the best marker. Look no further. Clearly evident in the pics above. Well rounded forehead....OBV2 Sloped forehead ....OBV3

Quote: "Dipping" is not considered cleaning... -from PCGS website BUT overdipping can lead to a details grade. I only mention this not to hijack this thread but to clarify a statement I saw on this thread. IMO
