I found this today in a roll from a a box I picked up. I am far from an expert on this kinda thing so looking for opinions on it.

The coin is slightly dished as you can see from the wear on the back...

Thanks ahead of time:)

changed title to better fit

In my opinion, PSD for sure. No way that's a legitimate mint error. Keep on searching!

Looks more to me that it was squeezed on the obverse and is now pushing outwards. The use of a split lock washer could have caused this. Another ruined cent.

The slight cupping made me think the same >>> Heat had been applied<<< But the aging of the damaged and the coin look the same so must have been done early on...

It's PSD as stated before, not an error coin. Impossible to happen at the U.S. Mint 100%.

@SD, any silver colored metal you see peeking through the copper plating is the zinc core rather than solder. This looks to me like straight mechanical damage.

I appreciate all the feed back everyone!

Just for clarification - I completely understand this is PSD on a zinc copper coated cent.

What has me puzzled is how the raised circular pattern area on the front of the coin was created. I "think " it is an old copper solder perhaps? Coloration matches the rest of the coin quite closely. The slight cupping would match high heat being applied. Also there is some slight "running) of the solder? I don't think it is mechanical damage due to the fact it is raised.

I doubt we will ever know for certain what caused this but I do find the speculation interesting :)

You can use a torch put some heat on the raised area if its solder it should melt quickly.
You have nothing to lose.
