I am leaning towards real coin but with corrosion/porosity, a very harsh cleaning, and obverse damage at the date ; but the large difference in wear between the reverse and obverse is at the same time quite suspicious. I'd want a guarantee of authenticity with an ironclad no questions asked return policy (30 days if possible) if I were going to buy this coin. That being said, personally I would not buy this coin due to the extremely poor eye appeal and multiple problems; examples with far fewer problems in reputable TPG holders can be had for anywhere from $250 to $350 in Fine/Fine+ grades. It may look like a good deal now but you'll regret it later, unless you can scoop it up for around 20-30% of market value (say, under $75) in which case it might make a decent low grade type coin.

Its all a matter of opinion on eye appeal etc. And for the price paid (sorry - nosy, had to look at sold auctions ) I think you got a great deal! I would do that all day long. You paid less than half of what slabbed ones sold for in similar grades.

If he paid less than half it might be an okay deal for a type coin or starter coin.

I agree with the others here, that was a good deal, anytime one can pick up a Seated dollar for under $150 it's probably a good buy these days, it is certainly not an attractive coin but the price represents that as well.
