Many years ago, I had a jeweller friend of mine tell me he bought a whole bag of early Canadian silver (which turned out to be KGV to QEII dimes, quarters and halves in circulated VG to EF condition).

I thought 'great!'.

In his next breath, he told me how he spent all day on his polishing wheel making them all 'shiney brilliant white'.

I then thought, 'well at least it saves me driving through downtown Toronto traffic to have a look at them'.

My friend bought several junk canadian silver lots on ebay. I went to his house the day it arrived to helpn him melt it down. It was coins word silver spot in P-G condition he got a handful and saw that it was, silver and bad condition ones. Just to check for fakes he tested it with his metal detector, it only rung silver and copper alloy. So he prepared his crucible and when it got to 1500 celsius he poured it in and when he was close to emptying the bucket we saw a 1921 5 cent probably G-F condition fall in. Only to be melted down. And so on the silver bar he stamped the words "1 LB 999 Silver - Includes The Melted Down Remains Of A 1921 Nickel"

Does your friend also have a refinery too? How would a simple melt turn .800 silver to .999?.

By stamping it as such, I hope whomever buys it gets it tested first!!
