1947 Liberty Half Dollar ?error? Question

Jakecg11 New Member United States 2 Posts	Posted 07/17/2019 6:53 pm Hi my name is Jake and this is my first time posting. Apologies in advance for any ignorance on my end. For the past week I have been trying to organize and sort through my Dad's coin collection for me and my brother (our Dad passed away a few years back). I have been having an ok time finding stuff online and educating myself about coins, but I can't find anything on this particular coin. I was going through a stack of my Dad's Liberty Half Dollars and found this one with an "E', "H', and possibly another letter near her chest. I can't find anything that looks like this online. Is this some kind of error, or someone in the last 70 years stamped the coin themselves with letters. I'm assuming its the latter because of the font type and size being so different, but I am a novice to the Coin World so I thought I would ask the experts. It has been fun going through all of these coins. I can see why my dad thought it was cool. Thanks in advance for the help! Report this Post to the Staff

It is a counterstamp done by somebody outside the mint. Some people actually collect these especially if they can attributed to a known source. Report this Post to the Staff

Second, it looks to me like there may also be a second partial letter on her head (see below for my attempt to enlarge and enhance this area). While these sorts of maverick counterstamps are almost never attributable, I recommend that you cross post this coin to this CCF thread: http://goccf.com/t/126486 There are a couple people who hang out there (@exoguy in particular) who may have an idea for you. Don't get your hopes up too much though. Jakecg11 New Member United States 2 Posts	Posted 07/17/2019 7:56 pm Thanks for the help everyone! I didn't even know the term counterstamp, so at minimum I am happy to learn that. I was trying to think of any relatives that might have done it, but E and H doesn't match anyone I know. So most likely a random maverick counterstamper. There is so much to learn about the world of coin collecting. It is overwhelming. Also, at the bottom of the one box of coins was an old cigar box filled with stamps, so that is my next rabbit hole :) My family pretty much only collects Marvel and DC non-sports trading cards and comic book themed art, so this is all new to me.
