I realize that several sites have mostly partial suggested pricing lists for these types of US variety coins. However, it would be nice to have a place to go that has a 'comprehensive' list of either/or wholesale/retail pricing for most varietal US coins.

Any suggestions that would help me find websites like these worthy of bookmarking would be appreciated.

Most varieties, unless REALLY well known, are worth what a buyer will pay.
And even well studied series such as Morgan dollars don't have websites than go deeply into the varieties.
Mostly it's a matter of buying the book and finding verbal comments on availability (rare, scarce, etc.)
Snow's guide to FE and IHC varieties give generalized comments on availability of varieties.
Buy the specialty book for series that interest you.

100% this.

I would add, Breens Encyclopedia is a good general reference.

I know a lot of it is outdated and some of it is flat out wrong, but it is a good book to have for a myriad of reasons.

The problem is varity collecting is a THIN market. They can't even keep up a guide for regular date and mint coins that everyone agrees on. There are many price guides on those and there are complaints of over or under valuing on all of them. As is frequently said a guide is just that a GUIDE. So when it comes to variety price guides they are few, far between and not frequently updated. Two of the most extensive, those for Large cents CQR (Copper quotes by Robinson) and Penny Prices (by Bill Noyes) haven't been revised for close to a decade. Pierre Fricke used to put out a price guide on Capped bust half varieties, I don't know if he still does. For Seated dimes Fortin's Seated dimes website might be good. But in general it is a matter of watching auctions, and the websites of specialist dealers. Since the specialist deal with the market on a daily basis they have the best feel for values.

The best specialty reference books are pretty much worthless as far as valuation because they don't include values except in reference to auction records of a few condition census pieces. Those prices are usually old by the time the book is printed, and new editions of the books come out infrequently.

Condor101 - well put! joecoin - I too agree the Breen Encyclopedia is still a good reference and finding them isn't getting easier, but with all the fantastic new reference books hitting the market in the past 20 years it has remained a bargain, I just bought another copy of $35.00 last week, bargains are still out there. My latest copy I got as I seemed to have misplaced my old copy and the new one is in great shape with the binding still holding up.

Buy and read books, it's not only the intelligent thing to do it enriches your knowledge and therefore makes you a smarter buyer and collector. (see my tag line here).

Finding pricing is best done by researching recent auction results or websites/dealers selling varieties, like Rick Snow and Charmy "the penny lady" Harker for Indian Head cents, Jack Beymer for early american coins, James Wiles for Lincoln Cent varieties, etc. there really hasn't been an all-in-one price guide since the late JT Stanton put out his "pink sheet" Cherrypickers pricing guides in the early 90's.

I did a bit more checking and found a price list guide for the varieties of silver dollar VAMs:

I believe one must sign up for a membership which appears to be free. It provides free access to this price guide:

I realize this info should fall into the VAM threads section but it is nonetheless still a price guide for classic coins; it's still related to my thread here.

For those that may have never heard of the old Pinksheet that JT Stanton put out back in the 1990's, thought you might like to see what a copy looked like. This is a sample of an early issue produced.

I can't remember nor find online how long it lasted, but it was around for a little while. I was a subscriber, but never kept any of the issues except for this one I still have left in my old Greysheet binder.

I'd love to see something along this come out online again today.
