A few years ago I got myself a proof goose dollar; $325 from a Brissie coin dealer (paid too much, but hey I am a collector not investor :) ). It didn't come with the case, and nor have I ever seen one. Have read they were a red colour, and that is about all. Just wondering if anyone has seen one and any chance of a pic? What was the original packaging of this like? Image: mygoosedollar.jpg58.12 KB

Well I like your response, but you don't know about the case hey? :) Saw heaps on ebay at one stage, have not seen any for a while, but the last ones I have seen went for between $500 to around $700 I think. This coin is the centre of my collection. I just happened to come across a wooden case the capsule fits in perfectly, and it sits at the top and in the centre of my collection. I almost dribble over the thing (yeah bit sad)! So I want to know everything I possibly can about it.

G'day, I second the remark of Mr Muckeye. There was a thread on CCF a few months ago. The similarity between our Oz "Goose dollar" of 1967, and the last Canadian circulating silver dollar in 1967, is more than a co-incidence, it was said. The goose season opened in NT last week, but I haven't seen any around yet. Peter

Yes I saw that thread. I found that rather interesting. I also have copies of the Coin Review Articles, and feel I have exhausted my finds on the net.

I believe Klaus Ford has one for sale in the lastest CAB magazine. Perhaps you could contact him. From memory, I think the box was either dark blue or black. Don't hold me to that.

The cases are maroon coloured, with the inscription "Australian Pattern Crown" inside the lid. I don't have a case for mine either. Really makes you wonder where all those cases ended up. Klaus has 4 coins for sale in the latest CAB, 3 with cases. Will set you back over $900 if you want one with a case. Over $700 without.
And it is my favourite coin too.

They are nice. I have seen some that have terrible black toning on them. Mine is quite good so far, but I am a bit afraid of that happening. Is there a way to stop it?

Your best bet is to keep it in something that will keep the elements out. You don't want humidity getting to it, or keep it exposed to the air. I keep mine in an airtite coin capsule.

Good I do just that! I even wonder if it is in the original capsule of issue - but the capsule is slightly too big for it so may be not. I assume they came issued in capsules? I feel I could get a better fitting one, but I just don't want to open it.

Endless, you should get a tight fitting one.... Lose fitting ones could scratch your coin if they move around in it.. Plus its a proof.. Don't want a any scratches whatsoever on it lol.... My suggestion, get a better fitting one, and I'm sure opening it for a while won't make it instantly rust :P

Peter, I still have mine. I too didn't buy it with a case, but that really doesn't matter to me either. It is definitely, by far, my favourite coin (even though it is not a coin). It has increased significantly in value and I believ will continue to do so.
P.S. Most people already know, but I'll remind them anyway. Even though it is refrred to as a goose dollar, it is a black swan.
Cheers

It's difficult to find a problem free example for less than a thousand. I got mine a few years back, glad I did, although mine also didn't come with a case. I have fixed that up now though with a suitable non-original airtite version.
