How to save money on postage.

All right, now we have to offer free postage or get charged on it anyway.

So, how does one try to defray the horrendous cost of postage and an ebay gouge on postage as well?

One way, is to use older mint Australian decimal stamps on your mail, rather than labels.

When one knows where to look, they can be bought in lots for about 65% of the face value, a saving of one third of the cost.

People love getting stamps on their mail, rather than boring labels, so it is good for customer relations as well.

I have been doing this for 15 years and it does help, in fact, in all that time, I have NEVER bought stamps from the PO at the face value.

Back in the 1970s and 1980s, stamp collecting was big, but like many hobbies, it has retracted or changed direction over the years.

Many stamp collections from this period come onto the market through major auctions/dealers, etc and can often be bought for this amount.

You see them listed on ebay sometimes at about 80% of face, this cost relects the approx 65% plus the fees and charges for someone to sell them via ebay.

If anyone would like further details on where they can be obtained for around 65% send me an email and I will try and point you in the right direction.

The trouble for sellers with this latest effort from ebay is that you know, they are never going to stop, just more and more pain piled onto sellers, which is depressing. Like watching a slow motion train wreck.

Naturally I, like many others, will make my complaint to the ACCC, but I am not holding my breath.

Sad really, ebay used to be a good place for sellers, now, it is not and just getting worse.

Gumtree paypal craigslist and host of other sites all owned buy ebay , Yes there greedy yes as of that announcement I will no longer purchase from them unless there is no alternative and I believe there is because ebay have gotten way over the top.
You can now purchase just about everything direct from the same sellers websites for less. I hope it is a down turn for ebay like no other and it ends there existence in this country. We need an Australian selling site like Trade Me in NZ. It would put an end to eBays antics.

Quick sales is no answer simply because most sellers are trying to charge to much there is no protection other than basic laws and no cop is going to give a rats butt about you couple hundred dollars you got hiked for in some other state.
Give you an idea , 1940 florin ebay start price 99c sells 8.50 3 post = 11.50 right. Quiksales start price same seller same florin well same year etc , may even be the same one. start price $12, postage $5 = $17 that's if it gets no other bids which at the moment is highly unlikely.

Now I know sellers start higher because they assume it wont get any bids but really why is anyone going to buy it when its cheaper on ebay and they have to pay fees there, No fees on Quicksales yet higher cost. It needs to be cheap for awhile to build it up and then bids will flow.

I strongly ask everyone to think of using alternative sites for the short term and hopefully things will change. I know I will purchase from Gumtree and Quicksales and a lot less from ebay.

What do you all think.

Sweetap, you said that Gumtree is owned by ebay in the first sentence and in the last sentence you said you will purchase from Gumtree and a lot less from ebay.
Why?
Either way ebay gets the profits.
Also if all those sites you listed are owned by ebay then why the heck hasn't ACCC done something to stop them? Perhaps force them to sell off the components in excess of the point where monopolistic power exists and scrap the condition that all sellers must accept Paypal.

Neileffendi,
I did actually put in a complaint in to the ACCC about paypal being forced on everyone,
They were actually allowed BECAUSE they own paypal. If they did not own paypal it would be 'third line forcing' and would not be allowed.

Yes Neil I did and I will for now, That is because it will one hurt ebay sales, two help sellers move across buy getting sales at Gumtree where it is a different management and FREE to advertise and sell for now.

But Quick sales will be my new permanent watch rather than ebay.

Yes lots of people have complained about the PP rip of saga with ebay and yes this postage scam which is all it is will also get lots of complaints but these corps have lawyers and make sure they can do it before they do or get told how to implement it till its no longer a problem with no thought or care in the world of how or if it is even a morally correct or not. Basically they don't care about you me or the next chump, they only care about your wallet and how to get in to it. Unfortunately.

Well one because they are allowed to own as much as they like and also as a US based company with a offshore account (Switzerland) they never ever have or will pay GST in this country until the federal laws are changed.
That means our money is flowing out of the country TAX FREE. You can check if you like I know its correct. You can do what many of us have already done make a written complaint to the ACCC and on eBays facebook page.

Proactive in rejecting ebay is the way to go.

The honest sellers are getting hung by their b.... because of bad sellers on ebay. How many times do you see a product for 99c with $10+ postage. Sellers were virtually putting the value of the item in the postage so they didn't have to pay more ebay fee's. Unfortunately we are the blame for what ebay has had to do.

Where an ebay seller is a business rather than an individual I now often do a quick search to see if they have their own website. Coins will often be cheaper there as they can control their costs better. Though I presume they don't get as much market coverage that way or they wouldn't still maintain an ebay shop. Always worth a try?
