During that time there were a lot of new things changed that were not for the best ideas. Single squeeze dies were started to be used. (in later 80's) These had the lower profile. the crappy planchets (zinc with a thin layer of copper plating) started at that time. The issue with the plating over the zinc dust that caused them to look read bad.

At the end of the 1980's the RPMs ended. Supposed thinking then that doubled dies were being phased out. (but later we realized that wasn't happening) People saved less coinage during that time. The
Ridge Ring issues with these cents. The multiple die clashes happened on the Zincoln's. Then the over polishing of the dies that removed a lot of the designs at that time. Kind of the "best" of the worst of times for coins then. Reminds me of the last years of the Wheat cents.
Just remembered the zinc rot issues and the split plating issues. It is amazing there are cents left till now from that time period. Thus we are still finding them. (and still complaining about them)
